Shingle Granules in the Gutter or on the Ground

One of the first things that a roofing contractor will look for is loose shingle granules. As your shingles age, the adhesive that holds the shingle granules in place may begin to wear off. As this occurs, the granules may come off the shingle and wind up in your gutter trough or on the ground beneath your eaves and overhangs.

As your shingles lose granules, they become thinner, which reduces their ability to keep water from seeping in through your roof. If the roofing contractor notices a large amount of worn-off granules, this tells the roofing contractor that your shingles are nearing or at the end of their life span.

Lifting, Curling, or Splitting Shingles

The asphalt shingles on your roof are exposed to a lot of various weather elements, including rain, sunshine, wind gusts, and temperature extremes. Weather elements can take their toll on your shingles. This toll may present itself in a number of different ways including shingles that are lifting, curling, or splitting.

If your roof has any of these problems, a roofing contractor will pay close attention to the age of the shingles, the condition of the shingles, and how many shingles are affected. If the shingles are older or in poor condition and/or a large area of the roof is affected, it may be time to replace the roof.

If only a few shingles are affected and the rest of the roof is in good condition, only the affected shingles may need to be replaced.

Algae or Mildew Growth

A roofing contractor also inspects the roof for signs of algae or mildew growth on the shingles. Algae and mildew can grow on a roof if both spores and water are present. Unfortunately, algae and mildew both retain water, which causes the shingles to be constantly wet. This shortens the shingles’ life span. The weight of the algae and mildew can also cause a shingle to crack.

If mildew or algae are present on your roof, you’ll need a professional cleaning to remove these items. Afterward, your roofer can do a second inspection to determine whether the shingles are damaged and if they need to be replaced.

Missing Shingles

The last thing that a roofing contractor will look for when they are inspecting your shingle roof is missing shingles. When it is windy out, shingles can come flying off of your roof. The shingles can quickly blow down the street, so you may not see them lying around your home or property.

If you do have missing shingles, those shingles will need to be replaced. Shingles help to prevent water from seeping in through your roof and causing a leak. Replacing missing shingles helps to ensure the shingles can do their job.
